Planning for the planned deep geological repository in Stadel ZH is progressing: On November 19, the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) will submit the general license application to the federal government,

On the same evening, the "Regionalkonferenz Nördlich Lägern" will hold a plenary meeting in Bülach and inform the public about the applications submitted and the next steps, as can be seen from the invitation.

Negotiations are also due to begin this year to determine the compensation payments for the affected municipalities. In addition to the municipalities, federal government and cantons, the nuclear power plant operators, who are responsible for the majority of the compensation, will also be involved.

However, it is still unclear how many millions of francs in total will flow to the municipalities in the cantons of Zurich, Aargau, Schaffhausen and Germany.

Nuclear waste repository in Haberstal

It has been known since September 2022 that the final nuclear waste repository is to be drilled in the Zurich municipality of Stadel, more precisely in Haberstal. The Federal Council and Parliament will decide on the repository from 2029. If a referendum is held, it will then be put to a popular vote. Construction is scheduled to start in 2045.

The first low- and intermediate-level waste is then to be stored in around 2050. The area for high-level waste is scheduled to go into operation around 2060.
