The federal government bans further designer drugs. Nitromethaqualone and synthetically produced derivatives of THC are now on the list of banned psychoactive substances. The consumption of designer drugs is a risk to health.
The Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) amended the corresponding ordinance and brought it into force on Tuesday, as announced by the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products Swissmedic. The manufacture, trade and use of the listed substances are illegal and are punishable by law. This is governed by the Narcotics Act.
The newly banned substances are becoming increasingly widespread, Swissmedic wrote. They are mainly sold via the Internet. The ban is intended to protect health and at the same time prevent designer drugs from being trafficked through Switzerland.
Nitromethaqualone as an individual substance and substance group 303, which are synthetically produced derivatives of THC, the most important active ingredient in hemp plants, are now banned. This means that 297 individual substances and 16 substance groups are currently listed in the list of banned psychoactive substances.
The consumption of designer drugs can endanger health. It is not known how they work, whether they are addictive and how harmful they are if they are taken repeatedly or together with other drugs, Swissmedic wrote.
