Switzerland is providing almost CHF 12 million in aid to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A program is being supported that aims to reduce the mortality rate of mothers and infants, according to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
According to a press release issued by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) on Monday, giving birth in the DRC is associated with major risks. Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis has approved CHF 11.9 million for the project.
The project launched by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and four local organizations aims to improve healthcare for mothers and children up to the age of five in North and South Kivu. Around eight million people are expected to benefit from this.
It is also intended to make medicines available and help train healthcare providers, including midwives. In the east of the DRC, epidemics such as cholera, measles, malaria and Ebola outbreaks occur time and again, wrote the FDFA. Prevention should therefore also be improved.
The SDC has been present in the DRC since the 1990s. According to the FDFA, it is one of the poorest countries in the world.
