Pruntrut prison, which is regularly criticized for its prison conditions, is to be closed. This decision is unavoidable, as the Jura government announced on Wednesday at the presentation of the 2026 prison strategy.

According to the National Commission for the Prevention of Torture (NCPT), the conditions of detention there are unlawful and degrading. In order to substantiate this finding, prisoners who were detained in Pruntrut submitted claims for compensation.

The prison is housed in a wing of Pruntrut Castle. The required improvements are often not possible in the current premises. The closure will follow the integration of the Moutier prison into the Jura.

Another part of the prison strategy provides for the integration of the 41-place prison in Moutier as part of the change of canton in January 2026. Together with the prison in Delsberg, the canton of Jura will increase the number of places from the current 35 to 55, as the government also announced.

Despite the integration of Moutier, the project to build a new prison remains on the table. In order to guarantee public safety, the need for prison places, which amounts to almost 100 places, is still not covered.
