The art magazine "Monopol" has named Austrian choreographer Florentina Holzinger the most influential artist of the year. The magazine sees an "emotional impact" in her works. In second place this time was a city, Paris.
"Her work has a visual and emotional impact that leaves no one cold and is unparalleled in the art world in its consistency," says the magazine in its December issue, which will be published on Friday.
It publishes an annual ranking of the 100 most influential personalities in the art world. Holzinger is known for her spectacular stage plays and works with nude female ensembles.
"She thinks bigger and freer than many in the classical art world and shows no fear of pathos and spectacle," writes "Monopol" in its statement. Visitors to her provocative opera performance "Sancta" in Stuttgart had complained of nausea.
Paris and Yael Bartana high up
The magazine puts the French capital in second place. Paris has become the center of interest thanks to private collections, top-class museum exhibitions and the Art Basel Paris art fair. "The art world has an old new European capital."
Israeli artist Yael Bartana, who exhibited in the German Pavilion at this year's Venice Art Biennale, came third. In many of her major films and projects, she has demonstrated the ability to pose political questions aesthetically and to avoid simple slogans.
