The website of the canton of Schwyz is functional again after the hacker attack on Sunday. No data was stolen during the attack, nor was it possible to access the system, as Andreas Luig, media spokesman for the canton of Schwyz, told Keystone-SDA on Monday.

According to Luig, this was a purely external attack. It is practically impossible to defend against these classic overload attacks, known as DDOS attacks. The external data center is confronted with numerous requests and is consequently overloaded.

The canton's website has been working again since around 9 a.m. on Monday morning. Sunday's vote was not affected by the hacker attack as, according to Luig, it was conducted via a different server.

The hacker attack was carried out on the eastern Swiss website provider Backslash on Sunday morning. As a result, numerous websites in the cantons of Glarus and Aargau were unavailable. By the afternoon, all but the website of the canton of Schwyz were accessible again.
