Summer Weekend Leads to High Traffic Volume

The summer holidays and the start of the school holidays in the canton of Zurich led to a high volume of traffic at airports and along the north-south route. At the Gotthard North Portal, traffic jams of up to 15 kilometres in length were reported, while the airports reported no problems. On summer weekends, Swiss airports are usually very busy. At Geneva Airport, 150,000 travellers were expected between Friday and Sunday, and at Basel Airport, almost 90,000. Zurich Airport does not publish daily figures for July until mid-August, but it expects around 100,000 passengers on weekends during the summer holidays. Weather conditions caused some delays at Zurich Airport on Saturday night, when a handling stop was imposed for an hour due to a thunderstorm. Temperatures rose to over 30 degrees Celsius in many places, with 35.7 degrees recorded in Altenrhein SG. The thunderstorms brought welcome relief. In the north of the Alps, temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 25 degrees Celsius, while the south of Switzerland is under a heat warning until Thursday, with temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius predicted. Traffic jams of up to 15 kilometres in length were reported at the Gotthard North Portal, with waiting times of up to two and a half hours. At the Gotthard South Portal, traffic was backed up for five kilometres, with a waiting time of 50 minutes.
