On Monday afternoon, the large city festival in Basel began on both sides of the Rhine in beautiful weather on the eve of the National Day. Unlike other places, there will be no firework display, but it has been shortened by a third to 16 minutes. Around 100,000 visitors are expected to attend the celebration at the Rhine, which will last until 1am on the actual National Day. The highlight will be the fireworks at 11pm. Before that, there will be a rowing competition of the Waterway Club "Fischer-Club Basel" and the traditional demonstrations of the fireboat, as well as performances of yodel choirs, alphorn formations and entertainment orchestras at various places in the city centre. The budget for the Federal Celebration at the Rhine is 180,000 Swiss francs. According to the Basel Cantonal Police, private fireworks are now only allowed from 6pm to 1am on July 31st and August 1st. Within a radius of 200 metres of hospitals and animal parks, it is completely prohibited.
