In response to an unprecedented influx of travelling people, the Canton of Vaud is rethinking its reception policy. The Cantonal Councilor Vassilis Venizelos has announced plans to create smaller, temporary reception sites for 15 to 20 caravans. The Canton is currently in talks with local municipalities to reorganize the reception of foreign travellers. Currently, there is only one official transit site with 42 places in Rennaz for foreign travellers. If the Canton decides to create an additional site, it will take four to five years to complete. The creation of smaller, temporary sites could provide a solution as early as next year. Venizelos believes that smaller settlements will create less tension and risk than larger settlements. There are currently two groups of foreign travellers in the Canton of Vaud, one in Yverdon-les-Bains and one in Lausanne. Venizelos attributes the influx to the shortage of labour in Switzerland, which has prompted companies to offer contracts to these people.nnnnnn
