A tragic cannon shot accident during the Corpus Christi procession in Raron VS claims one life, prompting an investigation by the Valais cantonal police and public prosecutor.
One person was killed on Thursday during the Corpus Christi procession in Raron VS when a cannon shot detonated. According to the Valais cantonal police, no other people were injured.
The fatal accident occurred at around 1 p.m. during the Corpus Christi procession, police spokesman Stève Léger confirmed media reports. He told the Keystone-SDA news agency that it was “a very serious incident.”
One person was involved in the accident, who unfortunately died, he said. The spokesperson did not want to give any details about the age or gender of the person. The public prosecutor’s office has started an investigation in collaboration with the cantonal police in order to clarify the causes and circumstances of the accident.
On Corpus Christi, one of the most important Catholic holidays, cannon shots are fired in many Catholic towns according to an old tradition.
