An Easyjet Airbus A320 Neo dangerously flew too low over Lake Geneva, prompting an investigation and temporary suspension of its pilots. The incident highlights safety concerns and protocols at Geneva Cointrin Airport, where Easyjet is a major operator. This event underscores the importance of stringent safety measures in aviation.
The dangerous maneuver took place on 5 November, according to a report by the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (Sust). The “Tribune de Genève” newspaper reported on the incident on Tuesday. The reason for the dangerous low-level flight was unknown.
The British airline Easyjet aircraft had taken off from Edinburgh (Scotland). According to the brief preliminary report from Sust, the plane descended well below the glide path on its approach to runway 22 at Geneva Cointrin Airport. The two pilots had to take off.
According to the Tribune de Genève, the control tower at Geneva Cointrin alerted the crew, and at the same time, the on-board warning system issued an alarm due to the low altitude. Easyjet told the newspaper that the two pilots had been temporarily suspended, per the airline’s usual procedure.
Geneva Cointrin is an essential hub for the low-cost airline Easyjet. The company accounts for almost half of the flight movements there. The airline Swiss is in second place. Easyjet is the second-largest low-cost airline in Europe behind Ryanair.
