New processor from Lausanne to reduce energy consumption

A processor developed in Lausanne could significantly reduce the energy consumption of information and communication technology. This was reported by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) on Tuesday.

According to the university, a large part of the considerable energy consumption of computer processors is used to move bytes between the memory and the processor of a computer.

Researchers at EPFL have now presented a processor in the journal “Nature Electronics” that eliminates this inefficiency by combining data processing and storage on a single medium, a so-called in-memory processor.

According to EFPL, this is the first in-memory processor based on a two-dimensional semiconductor material with 1000 transistors. This is a key step towards the industrial production of such energy-saving processors.

According to the university, the choice of semiconductor material is important here. In contrast to silicon, which is widely used in today’s processors, the molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) chosen by the Lausanne researchers forms a stable layer that is only three atoms thick and hardly interacts with its surroundings. According to the researchers, this thinness enables the production of extremely compact devices.
