Federal Councillor Viola Amherd’s defense department is once again forced to search for Switzerland’s top security chief. State Secretary-designate Jean-Daniel Ruch has decided not to take up the post.

Amherd informed the Federal Council of the decision on Wednesday, according to a statement. Just over a month ago, Amherd had introduced Ruch to the media as the new head of the newly created State Secretariat for Security Policy (Sepos).

Several media outlets reported unanimously on Wednesday that Ruch could be susceptible to blackmail. The DDPS would not comment further on Ruch’s abrupt departure when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency.

The Federal Council had decided in April to create a new state secretariat in the DDPS. In the future, it is to develop and coordinate an overall security policy. The impetus for the organizational change came from the war in Ukraine.
