The reason for this was not only the heavy rain but also the high snow line and the associated meltwater, said meteorologist Gaudenz Fluri on the “Heute Morgen” program on SRF radio. Five bridges over the river in Geneva remained closed to cars and pedestrians.

As with the Arve, the Saane near Fribourg was also on the highest alert level 5. However, its level had dropped during the night, said Fluri. In the morning, Alertsuisse reported flooded parking lots in the lower town. However, the road was passable. The population should avoid the area.

In the cantons of Fribourg and Vaud, rail traffic between Ecublens-Rue FR and Moudon VD was disrupted, according to SBB. The disruption is expected to last until at least midday.

There was also further rainfall in central Switzerland during the night. Rail traffic between Biberbrugg SZ and Einsiedeln SZ had to be closed due to a landslide. Replacement buses were in operation.

According to Fluri, the Rhine near Basel could still rise. The Reuss at Melingen is already sinking again and the flood warning for the Thur in the Thur foreland in Thurgau has been lifted in the meantime.
