Zurich Airport diverted 16 flights due to the heavy thunderstorms on Monday evening. The take-off of the aircraft was briefly interrupted, said an airport spokesperson at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Due to a thunderstorm over the Kloten ZH region, it was temporarily not possible to handle flights at Zurich Airport, the spokesperson said. He confirmed a corresponding report on Swiss-German radio SRF.
The handling stop is for safety reasons. Airport employees are not allowed to be outside during heavy thunderstorms. The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology registered over 70,000 lightning strikes throughout Switzerland during the thunderstorms.
