1MDB scandal trial opens at the Federal Criminal Court

The trial of two defendants in connection with the 1MDB scandal opened today, Tuesday, before the Criminal Chamber of the Federal Criminal Court. The defense of one of them has requested that the public be excluded.

The accused businessmen are both dual nationals - the first has Saudi Arabian and Swiss citizenship, the second has British and Swiss citizenship.

The main defendant is facing charges of mismanagement, fraud, active bribery of foreign public officials, forgery, serious money laundering and unfaithful management in the public interest. His 46-year-old partner faces the same charges, with the exception of forgery.

According to the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG), between 2009 and 2011 the first defendant arranged for the outflow of 1.8 billion US dollars from the state fund 1MDB to accounts held by his Geneva-based company Petrosaudi.
