22 Red Cross members killed in Middle East conflict since October

The Red Cross and Red Crescent network in Gaza and Israel has lost 22 members in the Middle East conflict since last October. They belonged to the Palestinian Red Crescent and the Israeli Magen David Adom Society.
This was announced by the Swiss Red Cross (SRC) on the occasion of World Red Cross Day on Wednesday. As part of its support in the Gaza Strip, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was able to bring almost 200,000 tons of humanitarian supplies to the area.
The circumstances in which the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations provide aid in war and crisis zones are often dangerous. This is particularly the case when conflict parties disregard their responsibility to comply with international humanitarian law, according to the press release issued on Tuesday. The aid workers often pay a high price.
Aid organizations need unhindered, fast and safe access to people in need in order to be able to provide humanitarian aid, the SRC wrote. Humanitarian aid must not become the plaything of political or military interests, nor be manipulated or misused.
On the occasion of World Red Cross Day on May 8, the legacy of the founding father of the Red Cross idea, Henry Dunant, is commemorated. The international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement was born out of a desire to provide aid to the wounded on battlefields without discrimination.
