Circus Conelli on Zurich's Bauschänzli has drawn a positive balance of its 30th season. Those responsible are even talking about a record season - despite a turbulent start.
It was "like a bad thriller", according to a statement from the circus. The 30th season began with a Russian artist who was unable to enter Switzerland because his passport had expired. Then a Chinese artist fell during the first rehearsals and was unable to perform due to his injuries.
As if that wasn't enough, a thief was also up to mischief on the circus grounds. According to the circus, the mood of the 95-strong ensemble was temporarily "in tatters". This was also because the thief was initially suspected to be from within their own ranks, which led to mistrust among each other. But after a week, artists caught the thief and handed him over to the police.
The Gasser family, who own the circus, have "never experienced such a difficult start to the season in the 41 years of Circus Conelli's existence".
But then the 30th season took its course with 77 performances. 42 of these were sold out, which those responsible describe as a record. The final highlight was the gala evening on New Year's Eve.
