On Saturday, 400 people demonstrated on the Bundesplatz in Bern for better care for people suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). This stress intolerance occurs after viral infections.

The demonstrators placed 300 pairs of shoes on the Bundesplatz on behalf of the patients. Those affected were too weak to take part in the rally themselves, wrote the patient organization ME/CFS Switzerland. The need among them is great.

Those who suffer from the disease are therefore no longer able to earn a living. According to the organization, many families and partnerships break up as a result. According to the organization, it is mostly women between the ages of 30 and 50 who suffer from ME/CFS. It is not known why this is the case.

The disease often goes unrecognized. According to the information provided, there are only a few doctors in Switzerland who recognize and treat the disease, which also includes Long Covid. The number of people suffering from ME/CFS in Switzerland is estimated at 60,000.

National Council President Eric Nussbaumer (SP/BL) explained at the rally that specialized care for people suffering from ME/CFS is not yet good enough. There is a lack of trained staff for early diagnosis and treatment. He has an affected person in his family. The rally was peaceful and, according to the organization, had more the character of a vigil.
