An educational robot has been visiting four daycare centers in Vaud for a few days now. On Friday, the human-like robot was at the "La Nanosphère" nursery at the EPF Lausanne to provide young children with interactive learning experiences.
"Hello, I'm Nao and I'm delighted to be at La Nanosphère. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and exchanging ideas with you in the coming weeks!" With these words, the robot greeted the children and parents at the daycare center.
Artificial intelligence, automation, digitalization and robotics also pose new challenges for early childhood education. The Vaud-based company Educalis, which runs four crèches and a private school as well as organizing vacation camps, wants to offer children from the infant ward (from three months) to the small section (pre-school class) a "future-oriented pedagogy".
"The aim is to prepare children to adapt in a constantly changing world and to face the challenges of the future," said company boss Olivier Delamadeleine to the media. Equipped with interactive capabilities, Nao is an innovative learning companion.
"It is intended to raise awareness of robotics. It does not replace childcare professionals, but enriches the children's experience," added Delamadeleine.
"It is therefore an additional educational tool. It will never replace a teacher," emphasizes the director. The robot's role is clearly to give advice and tips to encourage children's curiosity and develop their general education.
