In the Bündner municipality of Tujetsch in the Surselva, a grass fire occurred due to a nostalgic steam train. The fire was prevented from spreading to a nearby protective forest.
At around 3:30 pm on Saturday afternoon, the emergency control center received a report of a hallway fire on the embankment of the railway line near Tschamut station, as the Graubünden cantonal police reported on Sunday. Around 20 members of the Sursassiala fire brigade and the Andermatt fire station were already on the scene in connection with the steam train's implemented emergency response plan, so they were able to arrive quickly.
Firefighters successfully extinguished a fire on an area of approximately 50 by 20 meters with the assistance of a fire brigade from the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. This prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby protective forest.
According to initial findings, a nostalgic steam train had previously traveled the railway line. The possible cause of the fire is believed to be the glowing exhaust of the steam locomotive. The fire and firefighting efforts led, according to a statement, to a roughly one-hour interruption of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway between Disentis and Andermatt. The Graubünden Cantonal Police are now investigating how the fire started.
