Air quality in Ticino improved last year. The canton recorded the best year for concentrations of the three main pollutants since measurements began, as the authorities stated in a report published on Wednesday.
The significant decrease in values compared to the five previous years shows "that we are dealing with a solid positive development, which is primarily due to an effective reduction in emissions", the report said.
After a brief stagnation in 2022, the average values for nitrogen dioxide recorded a significant decline, as the cantonal environmental office wrote.
There was also a significant decrease in fine dust particles. This was mainly due to the "almost complete absence of stable atmospheric conditions", especially during the winter. Although the winter was one of the mildest on the southern side of the Alps since measurements began in 1864, it was characterized by frequent periods of atmospheric instability, in contrast to the drier previous year.
As far as ozone levels are concerned, the hourly limit value was exceeded much less frequently last year. The canton explained this with a summer that was significantly less warm and sunny than the previous one. In 2022, one of the highest values since measurements began was recorded.
