Pope Francis has appointed Father Jean-Michel Girard as Apostolic Administrator for the Abbey of Saint-Maurice (VS). This was announced by the Holy See Press Office on Tuesday. The move became necessary because the abbot and the interim abbot resigned following suspicions of sexual abuse.
Jean-Michel Girard is currently Provost Emeritus of the Congregation of the Canons of the Great St. Bernard. The abbey asked Rome to appoint an apostolic delegate last Thursday.
Following a preliminary study by the University of Zurich on sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church, which was published in September, the abbot of Saint-Maurice Abbey, Jean Scarcella, who was suspected of sexual abuse and its cover-up, resigned from office.
His interim successor, Roland Jacquenoud, also resigned last week. He is accused by a former nun of sexually abusing an adult novice. According to the abbey, which spoke at a press conference in Bex (VD) last week, this involved homosexual acts between adults.
