The Swiss Federal Office for Armaments (Armasuisse) is testing two electric lorries for the army over a two-year period. The aim of the test is to gain insights into the military use of electric vehicles and their future procurement. The introduction of alternative drives is part of the Energy and Climate Action Plan of the Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (VBS). This is intended to reduce the VBS's CO2 emissions by at least 40 percent by 2030 compared to 2001. In addition to the two lorries, the army's logistics base will receive around 70 electric cars from autumn. The electric lorries come from the manufacturers Volvo and Mercedes. In the first test phase until autumn 2024, Armasuisse will test them for suitability in extreme situations and safety aspects in driving school operation and professional personnel. In addition, the Federal Office will compare the economic efficiency with that of fossil fuels. In the second test phase, the focus is on life cycle costs and the impact on infrastructure. The daily operation should allow conclusions to be drawn about the mileage comparable to the civilian environment, maintenance vulnerability and maintenance. The tests will last until the end of 2025. In summary, the Swiss Federal Office for Armaments (Armasuisse) is testing two electric lorries for the army over a two-year period.
