As planned, the Swiss Armed Forces will end their deployment on Wednesday following the severe storms in Valais. However, it will continue to be available in another form if requested by the canton or the municipalities.
"Our assistance under the ordinance on military disaster relief ends in Valais at 12 noon on Wednesday," Jean-Claude Gagliardi, the army's head of operations, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday. A total of 157 members of the army have been deployed throughout the canton since the beginning of last week, mainly in Saas-Grund, Goms and Val d'Anniviers, to clear debris.
After this emergency operation, the canton and the municipalities can ask the army for support in another form. "The canton of Valais is currently taking stock of the work that still needs to be done in the various affected municipalities," said Marie-Claude Noth-Ecoeur, head of the cantonal command staff. The civil defense will remain on duty until further notice.
The Valais was hit by severe storms the weekend before last and requested the help of the Swiss army.
