The army deployment in the Maggia Valley following the devastating storms at the end of June will now be extended once again. The troops will resume their work in the region next week, the Ticino authorities announced.

The canton of Ticino announced on Monday that the army had made a positive decision in principle to extend its support for the authorities in the Maggia Valley. The deployment had already been extended in the middle of the month until the end of July.

According to the communiqué, the army troops will probably resume their work next Monday. The details of the deployment will be determined over the course of the week.

The deployment of 436 members of the army had actually ended last Sunday. Among other things, they had built a replacement for the Visletto bridge near Cevio, which had been destroyed by the storm. In Val Lavizzara and Val Bavona, they restored vital infrastructure. This included clearing access roads.

The canton intends to continue the urgent repair work in the upper Maggia Valley in August. According to the information provided, the forces on site will concentrate on 86 repair requests considered urgent by the canton.

The storms at the end of June caused severe damage in the Maggia Valley and claimed seven lives. One person is still missing.
