Around a fifth of women work less than 50 percent

Part-time work is widespread among women in Switzerland: In 2023, 22.7 percent of employed women worked part-time at a rate of less than 50 percent, but the proportion is falling. In contrast, the proportion of men working part-time has increased.
The corresponding figure for men was 7.6%, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Tuesday on the gender equality indicators. Since 2010, this proportion has been decreasing for women (2010: 26.1 percent), but increasing for men (2010: 5.3 percent).
The unemployment rate for people aged 24 and over has fallen over the past two years: for women from 5.5 percent in 2021 to 4.4 percent in 2023 and for men from 5.1 percent to 3.9 percent.
According to the FSO, the unemployment rate for young women and men aged 15 to 24 will initially fall from 2021 to 2022, followed by an increase from 2022 (7.5 percent each) to 2023 (women 7.8 percent, men 8.3 percent).
In 2023, one in six men aged 65 and over was still working or looking for work (employment rate: 16.3 percent). For women, the figure was half as many, namely one in twelve, with an employment rate of 8.6 percent, according to the report.
