Author Felicitas Hoppe honored with Berlin Literature Prize

The German writer Felicitas Hoppe ("Die Nibelungen. Ein deutscher Stummfilm") receives the Berlin Literature Prize, which is endowed with a total of 30,000 euros (around 28,000 Swiss francs).
According to information from Monday, the 63-year-old will be presented with the award on March 5 by Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner. The laudatory speech will then be held by German scholar Roxanne Phillips.
Hoppe's linguistic art combines "feather-light humor with profound seriousness, wild fabulousness with a shy interest in a world that often does not mean well with people", the jury said in its statement. The magic of her stories lies in the fact that "with the verve of her texts, the rhythm of her language and the energy of her words, she encourages us not to lose courage and confidence".
The Berlin Literature Prize, which has been awarded since 2005, is intended to promote contemporary German-language literature in the genres of narrative literature, dramatic literature and poetry. The award is divided into 20,000 euros in prize money and a ten-month scholarship of 10,000 euros for further artistic training and education.
