Axenstrasse opens after safety blasting on Saturday morning

The entire stretch of the Axenstrasse, which has been closed since September 29, will be open to traffic again at 5 a.m. on Saturday. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) announced on Friday that the clearance work following the safety blast on October 4 at the Axenfluh could be completed on schedule.
The road will remain closed to cyclists and pedestrians for the time being. The reason given by Astra is that the route for non-motorized traffic runs outside the Axenfluh Gallery. Further clearing work is still pending there.
The Axenstrasse connects Brunnen SZ with Flüelen UR on the eastern shore of Lake Uri and is part of the national road network as a feeder road to the Gotthard highway. Last Friday, for safety reasons, 1500 tons of rock were blasted away above the Axenfluh gallery, which lies between Flüelen and the Tell Chapel. Measuring devices had previously detected rock movements.
The southern section between Sisikon UR and Flüelen was closed at the end of September. Through traffic on the north-south axis was diverted to the A2 highway via Lucerne and the Seelisberg tunnel.
