The Axenstrasse in the canton of Uri has been partially reopened following the rockfall on Monday evening. However, transit traffic still has to be diverted via the A2. Sisikon can only be reached from the south.

The Axenstrasse between Morschach and Sisikon will therefore remain closed, as announced by the Federal Roads Office (Astra) on Tuesday. The situation has been assessed on site by specialists.

Due to the storm, various debris flows and rockfall events had taken place in the "Gumpischtal" and "Galerie Schiefernegg" areas. In the "Gumpischtal" area, the monitoring equipment was partially destroyed. Monitoring was ensured with the support of a traffic service.

The aim is to restore the monitoring systems as quickly as possible. Due to the current weather conditions, further incidents cannot be ruled out, as Astra wrote.

The northern section of the Axenstrasse between Wolfsprung and Sisikon will remain closed until further notice due to the debris flow event at the Schiefernegg gallery. In view of the current weather conditions, it is not foreseeable when the closure can be lifted.

The section between Sisikon and Flüelen is expected to be reopened to all traffic supplying the municipality and its residents from 2 pm. According to Astra, the same rules apply to slow traffic as before the incident. In the event of further rainfall, a renewed closure from the south cannot be ruled out for reasons of road safety.

At around 8 p.m. on Monday, the monitoring instruments detected ground movements in the "Gumpisch" area. As a result, the road was closed and traffic diverted. No persons were injured. The road and bridge were not damaged. Axenstrasse is an important feeder route to the A2 highway and thus in the direction of the Gotthard road tunnel.
