The ban on doctors in the canton of Baselland is a fact: on Sunday, the electorate said yes to the corresponding partial revision of the Health Act with a majority of 61.8 percent.

The partial revision of the Health Act allows the government to order an immediate freeze on the number of doctors in certain specialties and to set maximum numbers. If the supply situation makes it necessary, it can deviate from the maximum numbers in a specialty or region in individual cases. Savings of CHF 7.7 million per year are expected.

This is actually a federal requirement: since July 2023, the cantons have been obliged to limit the number of doctors in specialties that provide services at the expense of compulsory health insurance.

In many cantons, corresponding legislative changes have already been implemented or are in progress. There was no opposition in the canton of Basel-Stadt, with which the Basel region had actually planned a coordinated approach.

The district council approved this revision of the law in April. However, as a four-fifths majority was not achieved in parliament, the bill was put to the ballot box. The FDP and individual votes from the SVP had spoken out against it. The "no" committee, consisting of medical associations and FDP members, feared a lack of medical care in view of the increasing demand for medical services.
