Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider warned of the consequences of social injustice at the May Day celebrations in Thun BE. Only a fair society is a strong society, said the SP magistrate on Wednesday on the town hall square in Thun. This can be seen in many countries, including in Europe.
Low wages, a lack of social security and a lack of solidarity in society are the breeding ground for anger and resentment, for polarization and populism, said the Federal Councillor. Those who stand up for a fair society also strengthen Switzerland's stability and trust in democracy.
In March, the people said "loud and clear" yes to the 13th AHV pension, said Baume-Schneider. She is confident that it will be possible to finance the 13th pension in a spirit of solidarity.
However, the social issue is never resolved, it is constantly arising anew. For example, housing threatens to become a luxury and healthcare costs are a major problem for many.
For solutions without side effects
In Switzerland, people can rely on high-quality healthcare. However, it must also be acknowledged that cost growth and the premium burden are complex problems.
They required solutions that were targeted and effective and had no side effects. This is why the Federal Council and Parliament rejected both the SP's premium relief initiative and the centrist cost brake initiative, which will be put to the people on June 9. Instead, they opted for counter-proposals.
Baume-Schneider called on the two hundred or so participants at the ceremony to take an even closer look at social justice issues in future. "If we don't do it, nobody will. And let's solve the problems instead of just complaining about them."
