Incorrectly disposed of lithium-ion batteries can catch fire. A new campaign aims to raise public awareness of the risk of fire.
Such batteries are often found in products in which they would not be expected, wrote Swiss Recycling, the competence center for recycling and the circular economy in Switzerland, in a press release on Friday. For example, in a talking cuddly toy, a musical birthday card or wireless headphones.
According to the communiqué, it is not only valuable raw materials that are wasted if such items end up in normal waste. Time and again in Switzerland, incorrectly disposed batteries cause fires - in households, in waste disposal vehicles or in waste and recycling facilities.
In addition to Swiss Recycling, the collection systems for batteries and electronic devices are also involved in the awareness-raising campaign. Consumers can find information on the correct handling of rechargeable batteries on the brandgefaehrlich.ch website. A training film is also part of the campaign. As part of the campaign, municipalities and waste disposal companies will also be provided with posters, flyers and stickers.
