Candidates Compete for Newburgh Council of States Seats

On October 22nd, candidates will compete for one of two Neuchâtel seats in the Swiss Council of States. This is fewer than the 18 candidates who ran in the last election in 2019. Only five women are running this year, compared to nine in the previous election. Seven lists are competing, including the FDP, SP, Greens, Labour Party, SVP, and Green Liberals, each with two candidates. The former SVP MP Jean-Luc Pieren is running alone on the European Federalists list. The two incumbents, Philippe Bauer (FDP) and Céline Vara (Greens), are running again. The FDP is likely to retain their seat due to the proportional voting system in Neuchâtel. On the left side, a battle is expected between the Greens and the SP, who are hoping to regain the seat they lost four years ago. SP National Councillor Baptiste Hurni and La Chaux-de-Fonds City Councillor Théo Huguenin-Elie are running on the SP list. The Greens' Céline Vara and National Councillor Fabien Fivaz are running together, and may benefit from a female bonus due to the low number of female candidates. If the Greens retain their seat, Grossrätin Clarence Chollet has the best chance of taking Fivaz's seat in the National Council.nnnnnnnnnnnn
