The Fribourg State Council expects the accounts to remain balanced in 2025. The budget shows a minimal revenue surplus of 700,000 francs, as the canton announced on Wednesday.

The State Council had to make numerous cutbacks on the way to the black zero. These included the renunciation of any cost-of-living adjustment and the staggered implementation of measures decided by the Grand Council.

The budget balance was also achieved thanks to an extraordinary, one-off external contribution, the statement continued. The canton of Fribourg is hoping to receive CHF 17.5 million from the National Bank from the redemption of the sixth series of banknotes.

According to the State Council, the overall financial outlook has deteriorated significantly, especially as costs are increasingly being passed on from the municipalities to the state. The federal government's relief program will also have an impact on the canton's finances. The State Council intends to present a restructuring program by the spring.
