The Swiss Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV) has extended the order to protect poultry from bird flu until October 15th, 2023. The disease is still present locally in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Thurgau and Waadt in breeding areas of gulls. It cannot be ruled out that domestic poultry can also be infected. Therefore, local protection measures can be ordered by the cantonal veterinary offices. As the breeding season of wild birds is coming to an end, they are less bound to a certain location, which could change the course of the disease. The BLV urges vigilance and recommends that anyone who notices signs of bird flu in domestic poultry should report it to a veterinarian. Poultry must also be registered with the competent authority of the canton. It is also recommended to think of protection against bird flu before winter. Enclosures should be covered or fenced to prevent contact between domestic poultry and wild birds. It is highly likely that poultry will have to be protected from bird flu again next winter.
