The Conference of Cantonal Health Directors (GDK) has opposed the proposal for a national hospital planning. GDK President Lukas Engelberger told "SonntagsBlick" that the federal government is far removed from the everyday realities of healthcare provision. The Federal Government would need to build structures and acquire the necessary knowledge, according to Engelberger in the interview published on Sunday. Consequently, the Federal Government would also have to pay for inpatient hospital treatments. Currently, the cantons are bearing more than half of these costs. The cantons should plan better and cooperate more closely, said Engelberger. However, the number of hospitals is not decisive. More important is how efficiently the hospitals are organized.
