Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis defends the publication of the negotiating mandate with the EU. The EU will also disclose its mandate. The aim is to avoid any suspicion of secret negotiations.
Cassis told the media in Bern on Friday that everyone should be able to compare the result in black and white or on the Internet with the mandate.
Switzerland will probably not be able to achieve all its goals in the negotiations, which is normal, said the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). In the end, the Federal Council, Parliament and the people would take stock.
A number of points could still be resolved in retrospect through domestic policy. However, all points in the Federal Council's negotiating mandate have the same priority.
The Federal Council intends to obtain a legal opinion on the question of an optional or mandatory referendum on the outcome of the negotiations. Mr. Cassis explained that this issue was not clearly clarified in the Federal Constitution. The Federal Council wants to be on the safe side and is seeking advice.
