Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis has described victories by Swiss athletes at the Olympic Games at the Maison Suisse in Paris as "a driving force for our national cohesion". They are a factor that brings the Swiss population together.

On Tuesday evening, Cassis had dinner with the athletes in the Olympic village and then celebrated the first Swiss medal, which was won by Audrey Gogniat from the Jura in rifle shooting. "It was also her first medal. Seeing her joy, the joy of her parents, these are small moments that are worth the journey," said the Federal Councillor on Wednesday at a media conference in the Maison Suisse in the garden of the Swiss Embassy.

On Tuesday evening, the Foreign Minister highlighted the Maison Suisse and the Swiss Embassy in Paris as an "outstanding example of openness, cohesion and joint commitment" in his early speech to mark the national holiday.

The athletes and their companions who take part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games "are among our best ambassadors", said Cassis. Sport is one of the few - and therefore valuable - things that all people, nations and communities on our planet share.

On Wednesday, Mr Cassis plans to attend further meetings and sporting events in connection with the Olympic Games. Last week, President Viola Amherd visited the Swiss delegation and the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris.
