The centrist National Councillor and trade association president Fabio Regazzi has been elected to the Council of States for Ticino. The only previous member of the Council of States from Ticino, Marco Chiesa (SVP), was confirmed in the second round of voting on Sunday.

SVP President Chiesa received 40.3% of the vote (40,549 votes), Regazzi 31.8% (31,962 votes). The third-placed FDP National Councillor Alex Farinelli received only 2,406 fewer votes (29,556 votes).

Green Greta Gysin, who tried to defend the former seat of Marina Carobbio for the left, achieved a very good result with 27,606 votes. Amalia Mirante from the new Ticino movement "Avanti con Ticino & Lavoro" received 19,527 votes.

Center party erases the shame of 2019

With Regazzi's election, the center has been able to make up for the disgrace of 2019. Back then, Filippo Lombardi was outvoted by Marina Carobbio (SP) by 46 votes after 20 years in the Stöckli. The Ticino FDP also suffered a bitter defeat in 2019: it lost its seat in the small chamber for the first time in 126 years.

The SP was only able to hold on to its seat in the Council of States for three and a half years. It had been vacant since Carobbio's election to the Ticino government last April. SP National Councillor Bruno Storni, who should have defended the seat, withdrew in favor of Greta Gysin after a poor result in the first round of voting.

With the election of Fabio Regazzi to the Council of States, a centrist seat in the National Council will become vacant. Grand Councillor and trade unionist Giorgio Fonio will take his place, as the party confirmed at the request of Keystone-SDA.

Voter turnout in the second round of the Council of States elections in Ticino was 45.54 percent, which was lower than in the first round (48.23 percent).
