"Collections" is the name of the picture book that will be awarded the Swiss Children's and Young People's Book Prize 2024. The book was illustrated by Fanny Dreyer and written by Victoire de Changy. The prize was awarded to the two on Saturday as part of the Solothurn Literature Days.
"Collections" is a picture book about seven children and their collections. The book looks for answers as to why people like collecting so much. Be it pebbles or chestnuts. Is the passion awakened when someone finds some particularly beautiful specimens? Is it the treasure that gradually emerges that makes it so appealing? Or do people identify with objects that hold memories?
The picture book was illustrated by Fanny Dreyer. Born in Freiburg, she studied in Brussels. She lives and works there as an illustrator, graphic designer and decorator for newspapers, the cultural sector and graphic design agencies. And she also illustrates children's books.
For "Collections", she collaborated with Victoire de Changy, who also lives in Brussels and runs a bookshop there. The Belgian author writes novels, poetry and essays for adults in addition to children's books.
"Poetic" texts, "subtle" illustrations
The two were awarded the Swiss Children's and Young People's Book Prize because they "impressed the jury with their artistic collaboration, which is expressed in this work", as the organizers wrote in a press release on Saturday.
"The poetic texts by Victoire de Changy and the subtle illustrations by Fanny Dreyer make the strong emotional relationships that we can build with objects tangible," it continued.
Dreyer and de Changy, the winners of the main prize, will receive 10,000 francs. In addition to them, four other authors or illustrators were nominated for the award with their books: Nando von Arb with his graphic novel "Fürchten lernen", Reto Crameri with his textless picture book "Alua - Garten/Urwald", Eva Rottmann with her young adult novel "Kurz vor dem Rand" and Lisa Voisard with "Insektorama", a non-fiction book for children. These four nominees will each receive 2500 francs.
The five-member jury assessed 140 titles for this year's awards. The Swiss Booksellers and Publishers Association (SBVV), the Solothurn Literature Festival and the Swiss Institute for Children's and Youth Media (SIKJM) are the sponsors of the Children's and Youth Book Prize, which has been awarded since 2020.
