Cultural manager Christoph Müller is moving from the Gstaad Menuhin Festival to the Settimane Musicali Ascona. He will take over as artistic director from the beginning of 2026.
It has been known since the end of October last year that Müller will be stepping down as director of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival after more than twenty years. It is now clear where he will be heading in future: to the Settimane Musicali Ascona (SMA). There he will succeed Francesco Piemontesi.
Müller will retire from Gstaad after the 2025 edition. Alongside the Lucerne Festival and the Verbier Festival, the festival is one of the three major classical music events in Switzerland. Immediately after his departure from Gstaad, he will take up his position in Ascona and become the new Artistic Director of the SMA at the beginning of 2026, the organizers announced on Tuesday.
This task is "also associated with an advisory function for the further development and repositioning of the tradition-steeped festival", the organizers continue. The SMA will be celebrating its 81st edition when Müller takes office.
In addition to his work as a cultural manager, Christoph Müller from Basel is a trained cellist. He holds various positions at the Basel Chamber Orchestra and has been artistic delegate and concert manager since 2011.
He has been artistic director of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival since 2002. He has also set up music projects, particularly in Basel. Together with the renowned cellist Sol Gabetta, he founded the Solsberg Festival in 2006, a chamber music festival that takes place annually in Rheinfelden and Olsberg and is directed by Gabetta.
