The Graubünden churches are taking part in the celebrations to mark the 500th anniversary of the canton of Graubünden. The Protestant-Reformed and Roman-Catholic regional churches of Graubünden invite the population to an ecumenical covenant day in Samedan in the Engadin.

The day will be opened with an ecumenical service in the Reformed Church, as the canton announced on Friday. The service will be broadcast live by the SRF and RSI television stations. Afterwards, all visitors are cordially invited to an aperitif riche in the Romanesque cultural center Chesa Planta.

The program also includes a satirical-philosophical cabaret by and with Luca Maurizio from Bergell. "Deus in Burnout - God in Burnout" takes a humorous look at the promotion of religious freedom and the separation of church and state. Readings, scenic village tours and a children's program round off the festival activities.

Forerunner of the canton of Graubünden

The merger of regional leagues in 1524 to form the Free State of the Three Leagues is celebrated. The signing of a federal charter created a new state with its own constitution, a forerunner of today's canton.

In the Free State, the Bundstage were the most important assemblies and the highest political authority. In the anniversary year, this tradition is being revived with seven Bundstags in various valleys. These will now be joined by the ecclesiastical Bundstag.

The founding of the Free State of the Three Leagues was not just a political act. The articles signed in 1524 also contained provisions on religion and paved the way for the reform movement.
