The island state of Comoros in the Indian Ocean has become the 165th member of the World Trade Organization (WTO). This follows 17 years of negotiations, as reported by the WTO in Geneva. East Timor will become the 166th member state in a few days' time.
"Comoros can use WTO accession as a means of modernization and economic transformation and as a complement to the country's regional integration agenda on the African continent," said WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
The WTO aims to promote sustainable trade worldwide through free trade agreements and technical trade facilitation, among other things. It supports low-income countries in setting up customs authorities and other institutions.
Comoros is the tenth country in the group of over 40 least developed countries (LDCs). There are special programs for LDCs in UN organizations. Who is included depends, among other things, on per capita income and level of development. A further 22 countries are still in negotiations to join the WTO.
