The federal government will purchase a plot of land for the controversial federal asylum center in Arth SZ by 2025. It wants to build accommodation with 170 places there.
The purchase agreement between the owner and the federal government was notarized in the middle of the week, as announced by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) on Thursday. The land register entry will be made at the end of the year. Planning, construction and commissioning of the center are expected to take at least six years.
This is the second attempt that the SEM has made for a federal asylum center in the canton of Schwyz. It originally wanted to set up a center for the Central Switzerland/Ticino asylum region in Schwyz with 340 places, but met with great resistance.
Now a center is being built in Arth on the site of the Buosingen campsite, which is being abandoned. This is also controversial.
