The federal government wants to push ahead with the development of the charging network for electric cars on national roads. It is making space available to private companies and looking for projects. Private companies are to take over the construction, connection, operation and maintenance of the charging stations.

The network of fast-charging stations at rest areas and service stations is already dense, the Federal Roads Office wrote on Monday. However, it now wants further expansion and is making additional space available to interested companies.

The call for projects concerns five lots with eleven plots each, which are spread across the entire country. They will be allocated to the most suitable applicants in the form of a reservation, according to Astra. Planning and a building application must then be submitted within three years.

Project proposals must be submitted to Astra by May 12, 2024. The "Electromobility Roadmap" includes the goal of installing 20,000 publicly accessible charging stations in Switzerland by the end of 2025. The projects on the motorways are intended to contribute to this.
