The federal government has temporarily converted the barracks in Kloten ZH into asylum accommodation for up to 360 people. Refugees have already been housed there for more than two weeks. The public was not initially informed.
Due to the high number of new asylum applications, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) is still in need of additional accommodation, as it announced on Friday. In consultation with the Canton of Zurich, the barracks in Kloten ZH will be used as temporary asylum accommodation for six weeks.
The corresponding announcement should actually have been published on November 3. However, due to an internal misunderstanding, this only happened today, Friday.
However, the change of use did not go unnoticed locally for so long: the "Klotener Anzeiger" reported on it in its Thursday edition.
Despite the temporary use as asylum accommodation, the army is still present on the site, according to the press release. At the end of September, the army agreed to temporarily provide the SEM with up to 3,700 places to accommodate asylum and protection seekers until the end of 2024.
