The mood of Swiss consumers has brightened slightly. The new monthly consumer sentiment index compiled by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) has improved.

In March, the index stood at -38 points, which corresponds to an increase of 4 points compared to February and roughly the same level as the previous year, as reported by Seco on Friday. The index had reached its previous low in October last year, when it slipped to just under -53 points.

The sub-indices "Expected economic development" and "Timing for major purchases" are above the previous year's level. Meanwhile, the "past and expected financial situation" points are lower.

The consumer sentiment index was previously based on surveys conducted mainly by telephone in January, April, July and October. From the beginning of 2024, Seco intends to publish the index every month instead of once a quarter as before. The survey will now be conducted exclusively via the internet and on an ongoing basis, instead of in the first three weeks of a quarter as before.
