The future of the Patrouille Suisse is hanging in the balance. The responsible Council of States committee rejects the continued operation of the Swiss Army's aerobatic squadron, but only by a wafer-thin margin.
The Security Policy Committee of the Council of States (SIK-S) voted 6 to 6 with one abstention and a casting vote by its President Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger (center/LU) to recommend that the Council reject a motion for the continued operation of Patrouille Suisse. This was announced by the parliamentary services on Friday.
The narrow majority argued that the additional financial outlay required to maintain the F-5 Tiger fighter jets used by Patrouille Suisse was unjustified in view of the Confederation's financial situation and the current global security situation. This was not justified in view of the Confederation's financial situation and the current global security situation.
A strong minority, on the other hand, sees the Patrouille Suisse as a flagship of the Swiss Air Force that must be preserved.
The Council of States will decide on the motion next.
