The federal government will be funding transport projects in the agglomerations with more than CHF 1.6 billion from 2024. On Monday, the Council of States resolved the last difference with the National Council.

Without opposition, the small chamber agreed to include the Moscia-Acapulco road tunnel in Ticino in the program. The Council of States thus followed the proposal of its Committee for Transport and Telecommunications (KVF-S).

The decision increases the credit amount by CHF 38 million. In the fall session, the Council of States rejected the inclusion of the tunnel project. At the time, the majority feared that the delayed approval of the project during the political discussion would create a precedent.

The National Council subsequently included conditions for the move in the bill. The Council of States has now approved this compromise proposal. The deal is therefore ready for the final vote.

Transport Minister Albert Rösti was also able to live with the solution found and made no counter-motion. There was no dispute that the tunnel was needed.

According to the proposal, around 1,200 measures in 32 agglomeration programs in all parts of the country are to benefit from federal funds.

Just under a third of the funds are to be used for public transport, just under a third for car traffic and just under a third for cycling and walking projects. Transfer hubs are also taken into account.

The federal government has been making contributions to the transport infrastructure of agglomerations since 2008. It contributes between 30 and 45 percent, depending on the impact of the respective program.
